The New York Mets are within the thick of the NL wild-card race. Reverting to classic “LOLMets” kind is not going to assist them.
However that is just about what occurred in their sport in opposition to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, beginning when a swinging bunt from O’s third baseman Ramón Urías within the fourth inning in some way was a run scored.
Mets beginning pitcher Jose Quintana and catcher Francisco Alvarez each ran for the ball down the first-base line, with Alvarez lunging to make a wild, barehanded play. The play did not work out, as he solely calmly deflected the ball as he fell to the bottom.
Sadly for New York, Orioles rookie Colton Cowser started the play at second base. As he ran for third, he noticed a totally empty house plate in entrance of him and took benefit of the chance.
Finish end result: a run scored for Baltimore, making it 4-1.
That wasn’t the top of it, although.
One batter later, Orioles catcher James McCann — a former Mets participant whom the staff is paying $8 million this season after slicing his disastrous, $40.6 million contract — hit a two-run homer.
The Mets got here tantalizingly near erasing all that. An eighth-inning rally, capped by a J.D. Martinez homer, minimize the Orioles’ result in 7-5. Given Baltimore’s latest bullpen woes (they rank twenty eighth in MLB in bullpen ERA over the previous 30 days), that was a surmountable lead when the underside of the ninth rolled round at Citi Area.
However first, the highest of the ninth inning occurred. And oh, the way it occurred.
With runners on first and second, the Mets went full Little League protection to double the Orioles’ lead. It began with left fielder Brandon Nimmo diving and lacking a fly ball, and it ended with pitcher Danny Younger lacking third base on a throw.
The 2-error play put the Orioles up 9-5, a lead they would not relinquish.
You simply cannot embarrass yourselves in entrance of Kevin James like that.
The loss places the Mets’ document at 65-61 on the season, and so they sit 2.5 video games again from the Atlanta Braves for the ultimate NL wild-card spot.
